Flow Meter Name Plate Specs: Decoding Serial Data, Ex Certs, and Calibration Codes

Quick Answer: A flow meter name plate carries model and serial data, process limits, Ex certificates, electrical ratings and calibration codes. Start with the serial number and calibration code when you ask Silver Instruments for a quote or a spare. Reading only the model number can miss liner material, output board or zone class.

Silver Automation Instruments supplies electromagnetic flow meters, Coriolis mass flow meters, ultrasonic flow meters, vortex flow meters, oval gear flow meters and thermal mass flow meters to Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Customers often send a name plate photo. We decode it against our production records before quoting.

Why the Name Plate Beats the Model Number

The model number tells you the series. The name plate tells you the exact configuration. A 2 inch electromagnetic flow meter can have PTFE liner, 316L electrodes, 220 VAC power, 4-20 mA HART output and an Ex d housing. Another unit with the same model may have hard rubber liner, Hastelloy C electrodes, 24 VDC power and no Ex protection.

We have seen this on customer sites in Vietnam and Indonesia many times. A water treatment contractor sends a model code but not the name plate. Later we find the site needs a seawater flow meter for a desalination plant with DN25 PTFE liner and IP68 remote converter. Then the quote changes.

Serial Data: What the Serial Number Actually Encodes

Most Silver Instruments serial numbers follow a format like SIL24A01587. The first part is the factory code and year. The middle letter is the product line. The last digits are the production sequence. We use this string to trace original test data, calibrated range, firmware version and order documents.

For a Coriolis mass flow meter, the serial data links to a calibration factor stored in the transmitter. Send the full serial number plus the model code. We can recover density calibration and mass flow calibration from our records. Do not send a photo with half the serial number cut off.

In practice, most engineers skip this part until a transmitter fails. A customer in Thailand lost the original calibration sheet for a thermal mass flow meter on a biogas line. We found the record by serial number and shipped a matching sensor within two weeks.

Ex Certs: ATEX, IECEx and What the Marking Means

Ex markings on a flow meter name plate show the protection method and zone. A typical marking for an electromagnetic flow meter may be II 2 G Ex db ia IIC T6 Gb. That means the housing can be installed in Zone 1 gas atmospheres. Another unit may carry Ex ec IIC T4 Gc for Zone 2 only. The difference changes cable gland type, barrier requirements and installation cost.

Buyers in the Middle East, especially oil and gas workshops in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, often ask for ATEX and IECEx both on the name plate. Silver Instruments can supply dual certified flow meters, but the name plate must match the certificate number. For dust atmospheres, the marking may show Ex tb IIIC T100°C Db. Send us the zone classification, gas group and temperature class.

Calibration Codes: What They Reveal

A calibration code on the name plate may look like CAL-0524-DN50-W-0.5. This string often carries the calibration month, the nominal size, the test medium and the accuracy class. For an electromagnetic flow meter, the test medium is usually water. For a Coriolis flow meter, the factory may use water for density and mass flow. A thermal mass flow meter is calibrated against air or nitrogen.

The calibration code is not decoration. A 0.5 percent code means the flow meter was verified to 0.5 percent of rate. A 0.2 percent code on a Coriolis mass flow meter means tighter testing and a higher price. On an oval gear flow meter, the calibration code may include viscosity in cP, especially for diesel or heavy oil service.

A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia ordered a DN25 oval gear flow meter for solvent batching. The original unit had a calibration code for 50 cP. The

new solvent was close to 300 cP. The meter was mechanically fine, but pulse output error increased. The fix was a new calibration range and a fresh flow test.

How to Read Process Limits on the Name Plate

Look for four values: pressure in bar or PSI, temperature in °C, pipe size DN or inch, and flow range in kg/h, m3/h or liters per minute. A DN50 magnetic flow meter may have a flow range of 1.5 to 60 m3/h. A DN15 Coriolis mass flow meter may read 0 to 2000 kg/h. A vortex flow meter may show PN40 and a temperature range from minus 40 to 250 °C.

The name plate also shows wetted materials. For seawater, check electrode material and liner. A desalination plant in Oman requested a seawater flow meter. The old unit had 316L electrodes and PTFE liner. The replacement quote had to match those materials exactly. For electromagnetic flow meters, check minimum conductivity. Most units need 20 µS/cm or higher for stable readings. Many Coriolis and thermal mass meters use a PT100 element for temperature compensation.

Electrical Data and Output Signals

The name plate lists power supply, signal output and protection class. Common values are 24 VDC, 220 VAC, 4-20 mA HART, pulse, RS485 Modbus, IP67 or IP68. Check the output before you order a replacement converter or add a flow totalizer. A unit with 4-20 mA HART cannot talk directly to a panel that expects pulse only.

We often quote water treatment plants in the Philippines. They run 220 VAC power and need local indication plus 4-20 mA output to a PLC. Some remote sites in Indonesia run on 24 VDC solar systems. If the name plate says 24 VDC, we keep that power spec.

Common Questions from Engineers and Buyers

Q: I have a photo of the name plate but the serial number is partly scratched. Can you still quote?
A: Send the photo plus the model code and pipe size. We can often identify the series and options. For older units, we may need the converter serial number or the original purchase order number.

Q: The Ex marking on my flow meter says Ex d and the zone is Zone 1. Can you supply the same?
A: Yes. Send the certificate number and gas group. We quote the same Ex d or Ex ia configuration and include the IECEx certificate copy with the shipment.

Q: What if my process fluid changed after commissioning?
A: Share the new fluid, flow range, viscosity, density, conductivity and temperature. We check if the existing meter still works or if you need a new calibration or a different liner and electrode combination.

Q: Do I need to replace the whole flow meter when the transmitter fails?
A: Not always. For many electromagnetic and Coriolis meters, we can supply a replacement converter or sensor separately. The serial data on the name plate helps us match the original calibration and output.

Q: Can you reproduce a calibration certificate for an existing Silver Instruments flow meter?
A: In most cases we can retrieve the factory test record by serial number and issue a duplicate certificate. If the meter needs a new wet calibration, we can arrange that before shipment.

Send Us the Right Data for a Fast Quote

When you request a flow meter price, send us a clear photo of the name plate and these values: flow range, pipe size DN, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, fluid type and output signal. That keeps the quote fast and accurate.
